JUST WRITE / ¡A ESCRIBIR! is San Diego Unified’s K-12 initiative to help students build the stamina and confidence to develop and express their ideas in writing.​Writing stamina is the ability to remain engaged in writing and develop ideas over time. The goal is not simply for students to write more words. Strong literacy requires students to organize their thinking, add meaningful details, explain their ideas, and communicate with clarity.​On the 2026 Smarter Balanced ELA assessment, 4,799 student full-write responses were too short to receive a score. JUST WRITE / ¡A ESCRIBIR! responds to this need by providing students with regular, protected opportunities to write across classrooms and content areas. Writing may include creative prompts, poetry, freewriting, reflection, and writing connected to classroom learning. Not every piece needs to be graded, revised, or polished.​Families, caregivers, foster families, and other trusted adults can support writing at home without teaching a lesson or correcting every error. Talking about an idea in any language, writing for a few focused minutes, asking an encouraging question, and celebrating one specific strength can help students build stamina gradually.​Explore the JUST WRITE / ¡A ESCRIBIR!
