The District-approved curriculum for kindergarten through 5th grade is:

San Diego Unified uses Benchmark Advance (English) and Benchmark Adelante (Spanish) as our core literacy programs for grades K–5. These comprehensive, research-based curricula are designed to support all students in becoming confident readers, writers, and thinkers.

Benchmark Advance and Adelante offer:

Explicit, systematic instruction in phonics, reading comprehension, writing, and language development

Culturally inclusive texts that reflect diverse voices and experiences

Built-in supports for multilingual learners, including resources for both Integrated and Designated English Language Development (ELD)

Tools to help teachers meet the needs of emergent bilingual students, students with disabilities, and a range of learning styles​

These programs align with the California ELA/ELD Framework and the Science of Reading, empowering teachers and students to thrive in inclusive, literacy-rich classrooms.

Amplify ELA is the adopted Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum for San Diego Unified School District. It is a blended English language arts curriculum designed specifically to support students in grades 6–8. Students learn to tackle complex text, make observations, grapple with interesting ideas, and find relevance for themselves. Students are engaged through dynamic texts, lively classroom discussions, and meaningful digital experiences.

The 9th Grade English Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum, based on the theme of Identity & Relationships, allows students to explore their own identity as well as the different identities of those around them in their diverse communities.
